On 10 April 2014, Marina Lochak, the director of the Pushkin Museum, presented the new architectural model which she hopes will breathe new life into the institution. She constructed her presentation around ten major points, addressing the core principals of the project to restore and extend the museum, set to begin in June 2014.

Marina Lochak underlined the modernisation of the museum as a priority, expressing her intention to equip the institution with cutting-edge technology. She expressed a desire to make the Pushkin Museum a major place of cultural significance, not only in Moscow, but beyond the boundaries of the Russian Federation. Her conference also emphasised the need for improvements targeted at accessibility, with plans for an increase in disabled access and educational programs.

The project was initially supported by the architect Lord Norman Foster through his company Foster + Partners, though the architect resigned from the project eight months ago following a disagreement with Sergey Kuznetsov, Moscow’s Chief Architect. The total cost of the renovation is estimated at $670 million, with construction expected to run until 2018.
