City starts building ice cave in Zaryadye
The entire cave surface will be covered with frost and ice, and its temperature will fluctuate between minus five degrees and minus 12 degrees Celsius.
The city has started building an ice cave at Zaryadye Park, said Moscow’s Deputy Mayor for Urban Development and Construction Marat Khusnullin.
«We are currently delivering and installing essential equipment,» he said.
A pavilion in the park’s northern section will house the 220 square metre artificial ice cave with several tunnels, arches and columns of varying height.
«All of the surfaces of the structures will be covered with frost and ice. They will be illuminated from the inside by built-in LED lamps. The temperature of the cave will fluctuate between minus five degrees and minus 12 degrees Celsius,» Mr Khusnullin noted.
A total of 500 trees and 7,000 shrubs will be planted in the park over the next 14 days, he added.
The Zaryadye landscape park, now being built in place of the demolished Rossiya Hotel, will be divided into four endemic Russian nature zones, including flood-plains, a northern landscape, a forest and a steppe.
According to experts, about ten million people will visit the park annually. Zaryadye will link pedestrian and tourist routes from Varvarka Street and Bolshoi Kamenny Bridge towards Vorobyovy Gory (Hills). The park is to open later this year, in the run-up to Moscow’s 870th anniversary, and the Philharmonic concert hall will also open there in 2018.
