Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin on Tuesday announced an international tender to develop the city’s river embankments.

Speaking at a meeting of the city government, Sobyanin said the Moscow River was one of the city’s “main assets” and that developing the embankments would improve the environment, quality of life and urban space.

“The prospects and comfort of living in Moscow depend to a large extent on how [the river] looks, how it is developed, whether or not residents have convenient access to the embankments,” Sobyanin said in comments carried by Interfax.

Currently, he said, much of the territory bordering the river is comprised by industrial zones or areas that are closed to the public and not in use.

Sergei Kuznetsov, the city’s head architect, announced at the meeting that applications for the tender would be accepted from Aug. 1 to Sept. 12. Six teams of architects will be chosen in September to work on competing development plans, and the winner of the tender will be selected in December.

In April 2015, the official program for the development of the city’s river embankments will be submitted.
