“Moscow residential districts need comfortable public areas around metro stations”

Moscow officials plan to focus on neighbourhood parks, squares and public centres around metro stations in residential districts, Chief Architect Sergei Kuznetsov said in an interview with Vechernyaya Moskva.

Kuznetsov explained that the facilities would be particularly popular in residential areas because central Moscow and the suburbs are planned differently. Specifically, residential areas lack cafes and shops on ground floors of residential buildings.

“Here’s an example: the Kuznetsky Most pedestrian area. All the ground floors there are occupied by cafes and shops. Do you ever see this in residential areas? Buildings there are located inconveniently; ground floors are mostly used for living,” Sergey Kuznetsov said.

Additionally, five neighbourhood parks will be built in the Southeastern and Western administrative areas within the City Government programme for developing public areas. Five more car-free areas will be created this year.
