Competition for Zaryadye design documentation announced

09 July 2014

Moscow is looking for a general designer for the development of design and estimate documentation for the construction of Zaryadye Park. Information about the start of the open competition was posted on the public procurement portal.

The total area of the projected territory is 14.2 hectares, which includes the main area of the park — 10.9 hectares, the area of The Church of the Conception of Righteous Anna — 0.5 hectares, and the grounds of the Patriarchal Monastery — 1.5 hectares.

According to the task order, which is based on the concept of the consortium Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Hargreaves Associates and Citymakers, the park territory is proposed to be split into several areas of landscaping, reflecting the diversity of nature found in Russia. Thus the park will have landscaped green areas, artificial lakes, hard surfaces (sites for various purposes, embankment, pier), and a number of structures and small architectural forms — tea house, playgrounds, bicycle parking, etc.

Recall that the project being implemented by the winners of an international competition, led by the U.S. bureau of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, is unique in that it creates a so-called “hybrid landscape,” mixing natural and man-made surroundings. Four typical Russian landscape zones are transferred to the park: tundra, steppe, forest and marsh, which are organized in terraces that descend from the upper level of the territory towards the bottom, from North-East to South-West. The project involves the creation of artificial climates and sustainable technologies that will transform the park into a “quasi-indoor space” with temperature regulation, wind control, and natural light simulation, allowing it to operate year-round.

In the design and estimate documentation, the general designer must also include landscaping of the Patriarchal Monastery and must design the technological facilities of the park, unloading area, and video surveillance and security facilities.

All working documents should be developed prior to November 1, 2015. The competition winner must also develop estimates and receive a positive evaluation from the Moscow State Expert Review. The initial contract price is more than 352.3 million rubles. Applications for participation in the competition will be accepted until July 24. Results will be announced on July 25, 2014.

On the territory of Zaryadye Park the construction of several major facilities is planned: an underground parking garage, an exhibition complex and cultural center, a soaring bridge, an ice cave (with an area of 500 square meters) and food services.
