The results of the competition for the design of the stations «Nizhniye Mnevniki» and «Terehovo» were announced

11 February 2016

This week were announced the results of an open national competition with international participation on the design of metro stations «Nizhniye Mnevniki» and «Terehovo». The winners are the Architectural Bureau of Timur Bashkaev and BuroMoscow.

This contest, like the previous one for the developing the concept of metro stations «Solntsevo» and «Novo — Peredelkino» — was organized at the initiative of the Moscow Architecture Committee and the chief architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov. Due to the competitions the jury had received a lot of interesting design solutions and bright ideas.

The jury consisted of the Chief Architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov, the Head of the Construction Department Andrey Bochkarev, the First Deputy General Director and Director of Design JSC «Mosinzhproekt» Anna Merkulova, the President of the Union of Moscow architects Nikolay Shumakov and others. The Chairman was the Deputy Mayor of Moscow on urban policy and construction Marat Khusnullin.

The subway stations «Nizhniye Mnevniki» and «Terehovo» will be included to the Third interchange circuit of the Moscow metro. The construction is already been going, and the opening is planned in 2018.

Both stations in its constructive solution built on a Spanish technology with the coast platforms, between which are the train ways go. The concept for «Nizhniye Mnevniki», developed by the Bureau of Timur Bashkaev, proposed to beat a modern design scheme with new spatial solution, which until now hasn’t been applied in any of the capital’s stations.

Most of them have island types: in the centre of it — is a platform, on the sides — are the paths. Normally, escalators are linearly continuing the platform and go to the ends; the platform itself is quite long, up to 140 m, and given the length of the concourses of the station reaches 300-400 m.

Coast stations are shorter and more compact; every detail is in a single volume. Escalators are located inside the space station, as if in a single atrium, connecting cash halls with the platform. They emphasize two bright red «rear objects» that connect the structural elements. The number of escalators at the coastal station device increases.

Innovative space solutions of «Nizhniye Mnevniki» are emphasized by the unusual appearance of the station, in furnish of which the architects are refusing, leaving the texture of the concrete.

Timur Bashkaev: «The whole interior is based on the mass of grey and dyed concrete. From palatial reminiscences, complex parametric, clean minimalist solutions and Soviet modernism we came to such a contrasting way as a new metaphysics, which allows achieving a strong imaginative effects with limited resourses. We have abandoned traditional materials, leaving only granite on the floor, staying away from metal, tile, marble, and propose to use concrete as the shaped material in its original form».

The theme for the station «Terehovo» initially born as a solution for «Nizhniye Mnevniki», referring to the adjacent Parliamentary complex. «People like the pillars of a democracy» appeared on the columns in the form of silhouettes drawn with the help of reflective paints. Subsequently, the solution was projected on the station «Terehovo». Ground lobbies represent huge portals floating inside the letter «M» which read well from a distance. The underground space through the use of white concrete and recessed lighting becomes bright, and filled with air like a light fog. The image, according to the architects, refers to the shape of the «Elektrozavodskaya» and «Babushkinskaya» with large bright spaces, where the passenger is a key element. With the Soviet metro design «Terehovo» utilize elements such as handrails and benches, finished with the familiar light oak.

Olga Aleksakova, the partner of BuroMoscow: «This is the second competition, which we won after the Triumphal Square. For architectural practice the competitions are playing an important effort that mobilizes the office concurrence, identifies the best projects and stirs the public interest».

The architects noted that all proposed project solutions are fitting to city’s budget and they have already worked with manufacturers of materials.

As pointed Sergey Kuznetsov, in addition to metro, the architecture is now coming in new sphere of influence, such as mass housing, social facilities and such «not architectural» things like jail, garages and similar utilitarian structures. «Working with such projects, we prove that architectural thought in the same budget can yield results in fundamentally different quality».
