The list of finalists of the Moscow Award in architecture and urban planning (Moscow Architecture Award 2020) has been formed. On the basis of the submitted applications and the first round of the Expert Council’s voting, it includes projects in 5 nominations, the winners of which will be selected as part of the second round and announced on the Day of Architecture on July 1, said Sergey Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow and the chairman of the jury.

Out of 106 applications, the jury picked out 40 applications in the following 5 nominations: The best architectural and urban planning solution of sport and entertainment facilities; The best architectural and urban planning solution of commercial facilities, which includes investment projects; The best architectural and urban planning solution of objects of education, healthcare, religious purposes and city administration, The best architectural and urban planning solution of a standard class residential building; and, for the first time, The best architectural and urban planning solution of transport facilities.

Among the nominees of this year there are participants who have already taken part in the competition, finalists and laureates of the Moscow Architectural Award (and the previous ArchCouncil of Moscow Award): Sergey Skuratov Architects, CU "Reserve", Tsimailo Lyashenko & Partners, UNK project, Mosproject-4 and others, as well as bureaus whose projects were submitted for the first time including Kashirins Architects, Archformat, which received high marks from the jury in two nominations this year, A.R.E.A.L. Architects, NIiPI IGSP, Kamen Architects. A complete list of nominee projects can be found here.

It should be mentioned that any capital construction projects that received approved architectural and urban planning decisions in the previous year can be submitted for the award. The list of nominations is compiled annually on the basis of the pool of submitted projects. This allows the award to respond flexibly to market changes and the emergence of new challenges that architects face with development of the urban environment.

At the second stage of voting by the Expert Council, five winners of the 2020 Award will be selected. Laureates will receive a Moscow city award and a cash prize of 1 million rubles.

“At the first stage, the members of the Expert Council vote online, we do not discuss the submitted applications, so the results of this stage are especially interesting. I am glad that transport facilities were included in a separate nomination, because this is a large and very important part of work, which is done by the city authorities and my fellow architects. We also see new names among the nominees, which is clear evidence of the development of the architectural industry. This is a very important factor for us, as the award was created, among other things, as a route of entry into the profession that allows new bureaus to show themselves at a high level,” noted Sergey Kuznetsov.

Moscow Architecture Award was established in 2017 with the participation of Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. The award is presented for the development of the most expressive, original, high-quality architectural and urban solutions of capital construction projects, the implementation of which meets the challenges of creating a comfortable urban environment and contributes to the future development of the construction industry in Moscow. Before 2017, Moskomarkhitektura noted the best projects of the year in the framework of the Prize of Archcouncil of Moscow for five years.
