The finalists of the competition for the reconstruction of the Luzhniki pool have been determined

The second stage of the competition for the development of Luzhniki pool’s spatial arrangement ended on April 29. At the final meeting of the jury, chaired by Vladimir Plotkin, the chief architect of Reserve and a member of the Architectural Council, the UNK Project architectural bureau was determined as the winner.

Second place went to the consortium of ARENA Design Institute of Unique Structure + LANIK, third place — A-B Studio.

The customer of the contest is the company CODEST, the organizer is the Luzhniki Olympic Complex, with the support of the Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of Moscow. The contest’s consultant is the “Aglomeracia” Center for Communication Technologies.

The open competition for the development of the spatial arrangement of the Luzhniki pool was launched on December 24, 2013. The contest attracted considerable attention from the architectural community. In total 43 participants registered for the contest. Of these, 19 provided proposals, including international consortiums, who were headed by a Russian architectural bureau as required by the rules of the competition.

The competition was held in two stages with a total duration of 5 months. In the first stage, in addition to the portfolio, the participants presented an architectural design of the future project. Upon completion of the first stage of the competition, the jury selected six applicants who continued to work on the project:

— Asadov Architectural Studio
— Consortium of ARENA Design Institute of Unique Structure + LANIK
— A-B Studio
— Arch group
— DNK architectural group

Project information

Maximum area of the Luzhniki pool building after renovation will be 42 thousand sq. m, of which the aboveground part (up to five levels) will have 32 thousand sq. m, the underground part (one level)  10 thousand sq. m. The area of the building will be 12.39 thousand sq. m, the area of the project development  3.48 ha.

According to Edward Zernin, First Deputy General Director of JSC Luzhniki, the water’s surface area that is used for sports and recreational purposes is planned to increase from 2 thousand sq. m to 6 thousand sq. m.

According to the chief architect of Moscow, Sergey Kuznetsov, the pool’s iconic characteristics, and from a historical perspective, architectural elements of the building will be preserved, in particular the bas-reliefs and colonnades.
