Majority of Muscovites want to see the Shukhov Tower at its historic location

22 July 2014

The majority of Muscovites (91%) who participated in the online referendum Active Citizen want to see the Shukhov Tower at its historical location — on Shabolovka Street. Over 46% of respondents believe that it is necessary to hold an open competition for the restoration project and future use of the famous TV tower. Less than 7% of citizens were for setting up the restored tower at a new location.

The survey was conducted on the initiative of the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow from June 23 to July 6, 2014.

In the 90 years of its existence the Shukhov Tower has never been comprehensively restored and today it is in disrepair. Due to the deterioration of the steel structures there is the threat of losing this architectural monument, which international experts have recognized as one of the highest achievements of engineering.

Participation in electronic referendums on the most resonant themes within the Active Citizen project is available to all residents of Moscow, including those who have never used a smartphone or the internet. Voting can be done in multi-functional centers — simultaneously with the receipt of any public service.

The mobile app Active Citizen for electronic voting among citizens was launched May 21. Every week the Mayor and the Moscow government bring up for discussion among users important issues for the city. By answering them, Muscovites can directly influence the decisions taken by the authorities. On June 24 voting was made available on the project website — ag.mos.ru.
