Recreation Area with Jogging and Cycling Paths to Appear in Danilovsky District

02 December 2020

A new recreation area with walking, jogging and cycling paths will appear in the coastal zone of the Danilovsky district of the capital. This was told by Chief Architect of Moscow, First Deputy Chairman of Moskomarkhitektura Sergey Kuznetsov.

The Moscow government has approved the design of the Moskva River embankment, which will connect Simonovskaya Embankment and the Marc Chagall Embankment. We are talking about a territory with an area of 31.95 hectares on the left bank of the Moskva River in the Danilovsky District, the planning project of which, on behalf of the Moskomarkhitektura, was developed by State Research and Design Institute for Urban Development of the City of Moscow (Gradplan).

The new pedestrian embankment is being formed as part of a comprehensive reorganization of the former ZIL industrial zone. “The renovation of this territory involves the creation of a multifunctional public space, a center of attraction, specified Sergey Kuznetsov. This new urban area will be a good example of a balanced urban environment with all the conditions for a comfortable life. And the walking area created in the coastal strip, which will connect Simonovskaya Embankment and Marc Chagall Embankment with residential quarters and recreational areas will become an attractive vacation spot for Muscovites and guests of the capital. Jogging and cycling paths will be set up in the recreational areas along the river.”

When preparing design solutions for the territory connecting Marc Chagall Embankment and Simonovskaya Embankment, specialists from Gradplan worked with the concept of the development of Marc Chagall embankment, which was developed by the architectural bureau Meganom, and with materials of the approved General plan of the city of Moscow. According to it, the creation of a main street is provided on the territory. Given the prevailing urban planning restrictions, the distance from the planned road to the river bank in its narrowest places is only 3 meters. Thus, when designing the section of the embankment from Avtozavodsky Bridge to the Simonov Plaza business center, the architects were limited by the planned main street and the bank of the Moskva River, to which the fairway is close at this point. Taking into account safety requirements, the extension of the embankment was not considered here, as it could complicate the maneuvering of ships.

In the current circumstances, the designers proposed to place a sidewalk on the embankment, the width of which for the main street, in accordance with the standards, is exactly 3 meters. On wider stretches of the coast, the architects also provided landscaping, jogging and cycling paths. In addition, it is planned to organize several new descents to the water, one of which will be reconstructed during the work on bank protection, including partial reconstruction and construction of a retaining wall with a length of 3.95 km.

Reconstruction of the embankment will create conditions for the unimpeded movement of Muscovites and guests of the capital along the bank of the Moskva River, and, in particular, organize a continuous walking route from Krutitskaya Embankment to Danilovsky bridge," says the director of State Research and Design Institute for Urban Development of the City of Moscow Dina Sattarova.

To organize pedestrian traffic, it was proposed to build ground pedestrian crossings, as well as to place stopping points for ground passenger transport and to equip bus bays along the entire Simonovskaya Embankment and Marc Chagall Embankment.

It is planned that at the end of all work Simonovskaya Embankment will provide entrances to the renovated territory of the former ZIL industrial zone.
