Reconstruction of Moscow Palace of Youth (MDM) in Khamovniki will last for two years. The works are planned to commence in the first quarter of 2020, told chief architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov.

The building which is an outstanding example of the Soviet Modernism was built in the years 1982-1988 under the project of architects Yakov Belopolsky, Maxim Belenya, Mikhail Posokhin, and Vladimir Khavin. In 2018 the owner held the competition for the reconstruction of the site and the winner was Moscow architectural bureau Wall.

“The reconstruction of the building itself will take about two years. The architects propose to reveal the building to the city in the first place, by opening first floors, fill it with new functions, which includes using roof potential as a new viewing platform in the city. Meanwhile, the general appearance of the building isn’t planned to be changed. After reconstruction, MDM will become the main public space in Khamovniki. As it was previously marked by mayor Sergey Sobyanin, the city is planning complex development of every district,” said Sergey Kuznetsov.

According to the partner of architectural bureau Ruben Arakelyan, MDM is one of the iconic buildings and possesses the potential to become an important cultural location of Moscow. “The concept provides that MDM will be a part of the walking rout from Gorky Park. Another separate important task is revealing the building and adjacent park of Trubetskoy Mansion,” told the architect.

It is proposed to redesign the interior spaces, while preserving its appearance. Excess advertising will be removed from the facades, and art installations will be displayed on the square in front of the building. Behind MDM, the designers propose to build a multi-level cultural center, where various events will be held.

“Now the project is on the design stage. Economy of MDM is planned to be restructured by optimizing the spaces, under which the needless additions will be dismantled and indoor premises repaired,” added Sergey Kuznetsov.
