Quarter Construction and Diversification of Services Help Maintain Isolation - Sergey Kuznetsov

The quarter construction system and the diversification of services help withstand the periods of self-isolation with more comfort, according to Chief Architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov. He expressed his opinion within a webinar on Anti-crisis Architecture: New Challenges of the New Time.

“Now the problem is that you need to get in the car, go to the hypermarket and there face a lot of people. For many, a giant shopping center has become the flip side of a residential neighborhood. And it is not safe at a time like this” - said Sergey Kuznetsov. “I believe that a smart quarter construction system with service diversification is the way to experience the things that are happening now with more comfort.” 

According to the chief architect, Moscow is now moving in the right direction. The new buildings have ground floors with shops, cafés, gyms and city services. Instead of large shopping centers, there should be shops within walking distance. This underlies the quarter planning of the districts, including that being implemented as part of the renovation program. The decentralization of urban life also contributes to a safe and quality environment.

“Unfortunately, today many residential areas exist around shopping centers. In my opinion, this is bad and not safe. The organization of urban spaces, which is based on the principle of decentralization, allows you to create jobs and place all the infrastructure which is used on a daily basis in the immediate vicinity of residential buildings. This allows you to save time every day, and therefore increases the quality of life in general. In addition, this approach has a positive effect on urban traffic,” said Sergey Kuznetsov.
