New Sports Center to Appear in Luzhniki

During the reconstruction of the main swimming pool a new summer sports center with outdoor pools will open in Luzhniki in May 2015.

According to the concept created by the Russian architectural bureau UNK Project that has won the design competition, the reconstruction of the main swimming pool building will turn it into a state-of-the-art aquatics center. Meanwhile the visitors will be able to use the new outdoor summer pool.

The project design of the summer sports center was created by CODEST, the general designer of the main swimming pool reconstruction. The center will be located in Luzhniki park, near the riverfront and the Vorobyevy Gory metro station. All structures of the new complex will be non-permanent.

There will be two swimming pools: a sport pool, with dimensions of 50x21 m and swimming lanes; and a recreational family pool with dimensions of 10x21 m. Overall, the water’s surface area of both pools will be 650 square meters.

Next to the sports center entrance there will be a ticket office and a gym pavilion with a doctor’s office with a total area of 350 square meters.

The decking will connect both pool basins; there will also be a bar under a light canopy located between them. The smaller pool will have adjoining shower rooms and an open-air veranda with a café with a total area of 500 square meters.

While the main pool is being renovated, the sports complex will be open from May till September. However, there are plans to continue using it even after the construction work is over.

The national competition for the development of the spatial arrangement of the main Luzhniki pool ended last April. The UNK Project architectural bureau was determined as the winner. Their project allows the pool’s iconic characteristics and architectural elements of the building to be preserved. The reconstruction will turn the pool into a state-of-the-art aquatics center with water park. The new center will meet the requirements of the sport federations as well as the general public.
