Kaluzhskoye Motorway project approved

28 January 2014

The city of Moscow has approved the first part of a reconstruction plan for Kaluzhskoye Motorway. “This is an important road and unfortunately, one of our most congested. In fact, it has ceased to serve its purpose,” Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said at a Moscow Government meeting.

The plan was submitted by Chief Moscow Architect and First Deputy Chairman of the Moscow Committee for Architecture and Urban Development Sergei Kuznetsov. The project will increase the number of lanes on an 8.4 km section from the Moscow Ring Road towards Troitsk from 4-6 to 8-10,and will include side roads and will establish dedicated public transit lanes in both directions. Mr Kuznetsov said the upgrade project includes 10 intersections and 27 public transport stops, all of which should increase the throughput capacity of the motorway by 2.5 times.

Deputy Mayor for Urban Development and Construction Marat Khusnullin said that the first part of the project should start in April 2014 and should be completed 18 months later. Reconstruction plans for the second phase of the motorway project from the Moscow Ring Road to the Central Ring Road, including design specifications and estimates, are to be approved by the end of the year.
