«Green» roofs: norms and regulations to be discussed during Comfortable City

One of the key topics in the program of the conference Comfortable City: New Challenges, will be the landscaping of roofs on residential buildings and social facilities, application of the existing regulations, specifics of the design and their influence on development of the urban environment.

In many countries, creation of green lawns and small gardens on the roofs is considered one of the efficient ways of improving the environment as well as the quality of life of the residents. In Germany, for example, when designing new buildings, a ‘green’ roof is often an obligatory condition. In Japan, it is recommended to place lawns, gardens and trees on roofs larger than 100 sq. m. In Switzerland, more than 25% of city roots are «green».

In London, over 100,000 sq. m of roofs are being landscaped every year. In Moscow, there are not so many green roofs so far, although there are interesting examples: the roof of the architectural studio on 34 Sheremetyevskaya street, the roof garden of the underground parking lot and the conference hall of the hotel Ukraina, the roof of the garage on Nametkina street. Improvement of the environment in the city is not the only function of roof landscaping. Green roofs help to save money: they reduce heat loss of the building, extend the lifecycle of water insulation, and reduce the flooding areas. Roof landscaping also helps to turn them into fully-functional recreation areas for the citizens.

The conference Comfortable City: New Challenges on October 24, 2018 at the design center Artplay, will have a special focus on efficient use of roofs for different functions, and roof landscaping in new construction and reconstruction.
