GES-2 Building to be Decorated with Blue Steel Pipes

04 November 2019

GES-2 is being reconstructed according to the project of the world famous architectural bureau Renzo Piano Renzo Piano Building Workshop; the reconstruction was ordered by V-A-C foundation. The authors suggest the building should be decorated with metal pipes of deep blue shade, which will also serve as wind generators. This was announced by Chief Architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov.

«GES-2 project is very advanced in terms of energy-efficient technologies — it is planned to install solar panels with an area of 5500 square meters on a translucent roof, and 70-meter steel pipes will work as wind generators, receiving energy from the turbulence generated by the wind around the vertical cylinders. The color was chosen by Renzo Piano himself — this is Malevich’s blue, a very saturated shade. It is planned that due to this, the building will be able to generate up to 10% of the energy it needs»- explained Sergey Kuznetsov.

This project is very special because of careful attitude to the history of the place and the building itself — the island of Baltschug is in the dense fabric of historical buildings, and the appearance of GES-2 (an example of industrial architecture of the early 20th century) is going to be restored as much as possible during reconstruction. The general designer is APEX. The cultural center will have an area of about 41 thousand square meters.

Inside there will be creative and restoration workshops, a lecture hall with 420 seats, a recording studio, a photo laboratory, storage rooms for collections, a bookstore, cafe and much more. An underground parking for 200 cars is also provided. A large role is assigned to the development of the adjacent territory, which includes a pedestrian zone with a birch grove, access to the water and a viewing platform. The opening of the cultural center is scheduled for September 2020.
