Building with "High-Tech" Plants Appeared on ZIL

11 November 2019

Plants that improve thermal insulation and reduce energy costs by up to 20% were planted on the roof of the «Pearl House», Building No. 8 of ZILART. This was told by Chief Architect of Moscow, First Deputy Chairman of Moskomarkhitektura, Sergey Kuznetsov.

«Plants that improve thermal insulation and reduce energy costs by up to 20% were planted on the roof of Building No. 8. They absorb noise and improve sound insulation up to 8 decibels, improve the environment, clean and humidify the air» — said Sergey Kuznetsov.

The total area covered by the plants on the roof of Building No 8 (by LSR Group) is 2000 square meters. The evergreen plant Sedum is native to the South American Andes. It is winter-hardy, and can live on the poorest soils, even in cracked stones, in addition, it is not afraid of fire.

«This loach with branched rounded stems will form a solid dense green cover on stylobates already next spring. The largest continuous area of green carpet is 700 square meters. After such roofs have been completed, their further use requires minimal human involvement, just once or twice a year» — said Kuznetsov.

After the construction work is finished, glass will be installed around the perimeter to cover the green zone. The green zone acts as an environmentally friendly protective waterproofing layer. Such a roof absorbs rainwater, thus reducing the load on drain systems and preventing relatively clean rainwater from mixing with wastewater.

«The green cover reduces the load on storm water drains by 50-90%, it prolongs the life of waterproofing, protects buildings from overheating in hot weather; in addition to a natural increase in comfort, this significantly reduces air-conditioning costs and extends the life of the roofs several times» — added Kuznetsov.
