30 May 2018

Installation of bas-reliefs on the facade of the Palace of Water Sports in Luzhniki is almost complete. According to the Chief Architect of Moscow, Sergey Kuznetsov, construction workers are supposed to complete all façade works by the end of May.

“By the end of May, all facade works will be completed: today, the installation of bas-reliefs is completed by 50% and the façade works are completed by 70%. As Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said earlier, up to 10,000 people can visit and play sports in the new complex every day,” said Sergey Kuznetsov.

The Palace of Water Sports is undergoing reconstruction under the competition-winning project by UNK project. The historical bas-reliefs taken down from the old building will be moved inside the complex after the required restoration. It was decided not to put them back on the facade so that they can be preserved better.

The new bas-reliefs are made of 12 x 8 meter fiber-reinforced concrete. Their useful life is more than 40 years. The author of the concept, the architect Yuliy Borisov, said that 12 bas-reliefs were made in total, they are being mounted along the perimeter of the building on the facades. They are two-sided, so they can be seen both from the outside and the inside of the complex.

After the completion of the pool reconstruction, a professional 50-meter pool with 10 lanes and two 25-meter pools with three lanes each, a water park, gym halls, a fitness center, a boxing club and a gym for children will be under the same roof. The pool area will be expanded from 19.7 to 56.5 000 sq. m.
