Chief Architect of Moscow to be in the Jury of International Design Competition for Chinese Eco Island

Sergey Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow and Deputy Head of the Moscow Architecture and Urban Planning Committee, will be a jury member at the international competition among 10 leading construction companies of the world for development of master plan and central buildings of South Sea Pearl.

Other jury members are Aaron Betsky, Benedetta Tagliabue, Donald Bates, Peter Poulet, Horacio Werner and Margarita Jover.

The competition launched by Hainan Airlines Group aims at creating an eco-tourist hub on 250 ha with residential buildings, hotels, tourist attractions and a port for two large cruise liners. The competitors will be design teams from China, Europe and the U.S.:

  • IROJE Architects & Planners (South Korea)
  • KuiperCompagnons (Netherlands)

  • The Jerde Partnership Inc. (US)
  • UNStudio (Netherlands)

Vincente Guallart, CEO of Guallart Architects and former Chief Architect of Barcelona will present a strategic vision of the island based on eco-principles, cutting-edge technologies and optimum design.

The winner will be nominated in the last week of August. The selected master plan will start construction in 2017, with an estimated completion date in 2027.

The Eco-Island is located in Haikou Bay, Hainan Island (China). Hainan Island was declared an independent province in 1988. The major economic focus of the island is tourism.
