Alexander Kibovsky: We should take a comprehensive decision on the Shukhovskaya Tower restoration and future

12 February 2014

The Moscow authorities believe that they should take a comprehensive decision on the restoration and future of the Shukhovskaya TV Tower on Shabolovka Street. “Dismantling the tower would be the simplest solution, but it is important to think about the future. I believe that we should consider the comprehensive conservation of the structure and its possible future use,” Alexander Kibovsky, Moscow Government Minister and Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage, said.

In 2012, the project to restore the tower was approved. An expert historical and cultural review was conducted. Under the project, the upper section of the tower built in the 1970s will be dismantled, the first four sections will be renovated without dismantling, and restoration work will be carried out on the fifth and sixth sections with dismantling and further assembling taking place. Therefore, the tower’s load bearing capacity will be restored.

The Minister said that the Shukhovskaya Tower has no functional use. “We should think about whether this tower fits into the urban environment. When it was erected, it stood in an open space. Today, Shabolovka Street has numerous high-rises and they hide the beauty of the tower,” he said.

In addition, it is not clear who will maintain the tower if we decide to relocate it. “Maybe, we should attract an investor,” he said.
