MARCHI students were advised to learn a pattern language

16 September 2014

The Chief Architect of Moscow, Sergey Kuznetsov told students at the Moscow Architectural Institute why they should definitely read the book, “A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction”.

Christopher Alexander’s book, “A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction” opened the program of publications on architecture and related fields initiated by the Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of the City of Moscow.

Sergey Kuznetsov

“When we were planning the Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning’s publishing program, it was decided that it primarily should be literature that is professional and popular at the same, so it would be interesting for both professionals and the general public”, said Sergey Kuznetsov.

The wider audience’s understanding of the essence of the architectural process creates public demand for quality architecture. If there is no such understanding in society, then it is very difficult for architects to work and to offer a quality product.

The book, “A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction” covers a wide range of issues — from the city to interiors. It is written in a good literary language which makes it an engaging read for anyone. Kuznetsov emphasized that this book especially will be useful for professionals, and in particular for future architects who are going to seriously pursue this profession. It teaches attention to detail, which you will not find in any construction rules and regulations, or in traditional architectural school programs, while the ignorance of these factors makes it impossible to design a comfortable environment.

Artemiy Lebedev

“The language of templates or patterns that Christopher Alexander and his co-authors came up with can solve almost any creative, design, and architectural problem,” believes Artemy Lebedev, a designer and publisher. In the west, this book has had a huge impact not only on architecture but also in other areas, in particular object-oriented languages of programming.

After the meeting with students, Artemy Lebedev gave several copies of the book “A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction” to the Moscow Architectural Institute library.
