Architect Renzo Piano to transform Moscow power plant into stunning gallery space
Famed Italian architect Renzo Piano is transforming a defunct power station on the banks of Moscow’s Moskva River into a stunning new contemporary art venue.
Piano will overhaul Moscow’s GES2 power station and the two hectares of property it sits on for V-A-C Foundation, an organization that promotes Russian art, according to Dezeen Magazine.
“GES2 will become an exciting cultural destination, offering new opportunities for artists and audiences on a local, national and international level and the first major venue in the city of Moscow for V-A-C,” said in a prepared statement.
The power station dates from the beginning of the 20th Century and was once a key energy supplier for Moscow. Piano plans to preserve the building’s industrial heritage by placing the gallery spaces within the metal framework of a central atrium, according to Dezeen.
The building’s chimney will provide natural ventilation to reduce energy consumption.
“Built between 1904 and 1907, the GES2 power station, once a supplier of energy to the city, will now be re-imagined to supply energy of a different kind – that of ideas and creativity,” Piano’s firm said. [Dezeen] – Christopher Cameron
