Russian Cultural Heritage Society to open public initiative discussion platform

A discussion platform will open at the Russian Society for Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage, Alexander Kibovsky, Moscow Government Minister and Head of the Moscow Department of Cultural Heritage, said at a news conference at City Hall.

The forum will be used to discuss public initiatives with experts and Muscovites.

The Gagarinsky Pereulok mansion, which houses the society’s central council, will be transferred into its ownership. Until recently, the building was owned by the city of Moscow.

Galina Malanicheva, Head of the society’s central council, said that the public certainly needs the opportunity to give their own opinions about town-planning decisions.

“When there is a lot of controversy around a decision, it is expedient to have a discussion platform to take into account all perspectives,” she said.

Mr Kibovsky noted some major changes in the way that cultural heritage has been managed in Moscow over the past years. For example, there are no construction projects in the city centre. “If you look at the centre, any construction project still seen underway is completed under an old contract signed years ago that cannot be terminated,” he said. No new projects have been started there recently.

It is important to maintain and preserve the historic centre, Mr Kibovsky added. Chief Architect and First Deputy Chairman of the Moscow Committee for Architecture and Urban Development Sergey Kuznetsov said that the only new project developed in the area is the Zaryadye Park.
