In its scale, the Moscow Metropolitan’s development programme is one of the largest in the world. It is by far the most ambitious of the city’s infrastructure projects. The role of the Moscow Metro in shaping the image of the capital cannot be overstated. The construction of its most beautiful stations well served to demonstrate the scientific and technological advances made by the USSR.

In the late 1950s, architectural masterpieces in the Metro gave way to a new period in station design, that of the less appealing Khrushchyov era. As time moved on, the search for a new individual station image began: the monotony of standard solutions grew obsolete. This movement from the standard to the unique continues to the present day. Although stations continue to be built to a standard design, a marked effort is seen in individualising their artistic look — with each having its own unique design. The fundamental aim of the present competition is to find an optimal architectural, artistic and design solution for the interior of Solntsevo and Novoperedelkino’s passenger areas and pavilions over the stairway approaches. With minimalist solutions, the stations have to be contemporary, with bright and memorable design schemes. Emphasis must be placed on the light and colour aspects, and the combination of materials. Construction solutions and the materials used ought to correspond with the aims and conditions of the competition; to be rational and technically feasible. To develop a concept, it is recommended to recruit professional artists and designers who specialise in working with light.

new line and the metro

The new Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya Line links the business centre of ‘Moscow City’ with the western neighbourhoods of Solntsevo and Novo-Peredelkino.

THE PRESENT DAY SITUATION

The 116 thousand inhabitants of the Solntsevo region, and a further 115 thousand in Novo-Peredelkino, have long awaited the construction of a Metro station. The capacity of the Borovskoye and Kievskoye Highways does not permit for a ride to the current nearest station at Yugo-Zapadnaya within a reasonable time period, and the closest regular railway stations are out of range of most pedestrians in the two neighbourhoods. And yet the erection of residential properties is going ahead here at a lively pace: c.f. the developments of ‘Nearer Peredelkino’ (1.3 million m² of living space), ‘Solntsevo Park’ (500 thousand m²), and ‘Tatyanin Park’ (270 thousand m²). Access to the new line will provide these with a vital link with the city centre and with other lines of the Metropolitan system.

CONSTRUCTION PLANS

It was proposed to extend the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya Line from the Delovoi Tsentr [‘Business Centre’] station, in Moscow’s dormitory suburbs, to Solntsevo and Novo-Peredelkino, and from thence to the village of Rasskazovka, where the organisation of a transport interchange hub has been planned. A passageway will be set up from the Delovoi Tsentr station to the line of the Third Interchange Circuit. The opening to passengers of the section from Park Pobedy to Ramenki is planned for the end of 2015. The Metro should arrive in Solntsevo, Novo-Peredelkino and Rasskazovka some time in 2017.

CONDITIONS

This is two-stage competition. Participation is open to designers and architects with experience in design documentation for the interiors of multifunctional public spaces.

The competition is national but foreign architects and designers are also accepted.

On completing the registration procedure, applicants will be assigned
to one of the two stations, after which they will receive the Competition documentation (including the Competition Brief and Rules), on the basis of which they will prepare an Entry for the first stage of the Competition, consisting of a Preliminary concept and Dossier. At the first stage,
the Jury will select 10 Participants; 5 of which to produce a design for Solntsevo Station, and five for Novoperedelkino.

Depending upon the quality of the sketches submitted, the Jury reserves the right to vary the number of participants for either stage, to range from three to seven. In the second stage, the Jury will select a single winner for each station.

The prize fund for the Competition stands at 3,890,000 rubles (including VAT) and is to be divided between the 10 Participants who pass through to the second stage of the Competition.

Each of the two winners will be invited to settle a contract for the implementation of their architectural and design concept to a sum no larger than 3 500 000 rubles.
