Results of the first stage of the competition for the appearance of the metro stations Solntsevo and Novoperedelkino

According to the results of the jury meeting at the Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of Moscow, 10 finalists have been selected out of approximately 100 works who will continue to work on the architectural design concepts of the stations until November.

Shortlisted for the second stage of the competition were 5 teams with projects for the station Solntsevo: NEFA ARCHITECTS [NEFARESEARCH] (Moscow, Russia), Anton Barklyanski (Moscow, Russia), Rosproekt M (Saint-Petersburg, Russia), Rhizome Group (Saint-Petersburg, Russia), Wall (Moscow, Russia). And 5 teams with projects for Novoperedelkino: Gerber Architekten (Dortmund, Germany), FAS(t) (Moscow, Russia), Variant Studio (Riga, Latvia), Boris Voskoboynikov Studio [NEFARESEARCH] (Moscow, Russia), U-R-A | United Riga Architects (Riga, Latvia).

As the Chief Architect of Moscow, Sergey Kuznetsov noted, the competition attracted a lot of interest, having collected over 600 applications and 100 teams of participants, including 22 foreign: “I believe that very interesting teams have entered into the final and I want to highlight that in an open international competition the projects of young architects have made it into the shortlist. This suggests that contests are performing their function of serving as professional boosts. This is very positive for the formation of a young and talented generation of architects,” said the chief architect.

This competition preserves the continuation of the tradition of Moscow metro stations unique design from the 1930-50s. In the past decade, a competition has been held for the first time and is expected to revive the tradition of searching for original and innovative designs of the metro.

As Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin noted during a tour of the Novoperedelkino and Solntsevo districts, when selecting the concept residents should also be invited so that they may participate in the evaluation. “In the end, it is they that will come to these stations, they will be the ones to admire the beauty that the designers will create,” added Sergei Sobyanin.

The competition to develop the architectural design of the metro stations Solntsevo and Novoperedelkino is being held on order of the Mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyanin by the Department of Urban Development and Construction together with KB Strelka. From over 600 applications received by the official website of the competition, 96 projects were admitted for consideration by the jury (Novoperedelkino — 46, Solntsevo — 50), which met the competition requirements. 22 projects were executed by foreign architects from the Netherlands, Germany, India, France, Spain, Great Britain, Canada, Italy and others.

The prize fund of the 1st stage of the competition is 3.9 million rubles (including VAT) and will be divided among the 10 finalists. Names of the winners of the second stage will be announced in mid-November 2014. Each of them will have the right to conclude a contract with the developer to use their architectural design. Contract price is to be no more than 3.5 million rubles.

The jury, headed by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban-Planning Policy and Construction, Marat Khusnullin, included representatives of the Moscow Government, famous architects, designers, engineers, professional historians and art historians. Among them, in particular, the head of the Department of Construction of Moscow Andrei Bochkarev, the chief architect of the Institute for the General Plan of Moscow Andrei Gnezdilov, architecture critic and exhibition curator Elena Gonzalez, art director of the Artemy Lebedev Studio Erken Kagarov, co-founder of the Design Lectures Olga Kosyreva, Chief Architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov, General Director of Mosinzhproekt Konstantin Matveev, partner at KB Strelka Alexei Muratov, founding partner and chief architect of TPO Reserve Vladimir Plotkin, head of NPO-38 “Historic Areas” of the Institute of the General Plan of Moscow Elena Solovieva, Executive Director of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art Vasily Tsereteli, President of the Union of Moscow Architects and chief architect of Metrogiprotrans Nikolai Shumakov. The moderator of the jury meeting was the General Director of KB Strelka Denis Leontiev.
