Zaryadye and Luzhniki are in the MIPIM Awards 2018 shortlist

31 January 2018

Two Moscow mega-projects — Zaryadye Park and Luzhniki sports complex — are nominated for the MIPIM Awards 2018, a major international real estate and investment projects competition.

«Moscow projects are now recognized not only at the Russian, but also at the international level. By implementing them, we demonstrate how our reality is changing, that we are open to new projects, such as Zaryadye and we adapt to existing requirements — a good example is Luzhniki. As Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said earlier, these projects were nominated for a major architectural award MIPIM Awards 2018,» says the Chief Architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov.

Zaryadye is nominated for the MIPIM Awards 2018 in the nomination The Best Urban Regeneration Project. The authors of the concept were Sergey Kuznetsov and an international consortium led by the American studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

«The original concept of the park Zaryadie proved its relevance, provoking great interest among Muscovites and guests of the capital: over four months of work the park was visited by over three million people! And we are glad that the park project has received recognition from the international professional community,» said the director of the park Zaryadye Pavel Trekhleb.

«Luzhniki» became a finalist of the architectural contest in the nomination «The best restored object». Reconstruction of the sports complex also took place under the supervision of the chief architect of Moscow. Mosinzhproekt, JSC was the managing company for the construction of the park and reconstruction of the stadium open to visitors in 2017.

General Director of the company Mars Gazizullin said that in 2017, with the direct participation of Mosinzhproject, Moscow gained a facility that could compete with the state-of-art engineering and construction ideas not only in Russia but globally. Representatives of the International Football Federation (FIFA) called the renovated stadium Luzhniki one of the best stadiums in the world, and the landscape park Zaryadye by the Kremlin walls, a unique project that, according to the authors of the concept, was realized to its fullest.

«We were able to realize these grandiose projects in minimum time due to the well-coordinated and professional work of all participants in the process, as well as the use of cutting-edge solutions and the latest engineering technologies in construction and design,» he added.

New symbol of Moscow

The decision to create the park Zaryadye was made in 2012. The construction began in 2014. The main works were completed by September 2017. On the day of the 870th anniversary of Moscow, Zaryadye was opened for visitors. The main pavilion of Zaryadye was the Media Center with five information kiosks «Moscow Now», a flagship tourist information center, an exhibition hall, a media studio, a souvenir shop, as well as cloakrooms, halls and mother-and-child rooms. But the most spectacular in the «Media Center» is the rides. «Flight over Moscow» with dimensional sound, mobile platform, 13-meter screen and special effects create a real feeling of flight, and «Time Machine» allows you to participate in Moscow events from ancient times to the present day.

The second large-scale pavilion of Zaryadye is the «Preservation Embassy». It houses a multi-tiered greenhouse complex (florarium), a scientific-cognitive center, a café, a souvenir shop and a bar. In the near future, it is planned to open a theme center «Ice Cave» with labyrinths, arches and pillars. From the hill of the «Preservation Embassy» one can see a picturesque view of the Kremlin, the Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed, the museums of the Patriarchal Metochion.

By mid 2018, Zaryadye is going to have a philharmonic, and in 2019, visitors will be able to enjoy the sound of a unique organ.

Historical stadium in a modern frame

The large sports arena of Luzhniki will be the main venue for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The stadium will host the opening game and the final, as well as three games of the group stage, one eighth finals and a semi-final. Reconstruction of Luzhniki began in 2014. The city has preserved the historical appearance of the Grand Sports Arena, having restored the walls and facade, and also perfected it with the help of modern technologies.

So, the facade was decorated with translucent panels with the image of competitions in different sports and equipped with spectacular architectural lighting with three modes of operation. The priority task was the creation of comfortable conditions for the fans. To do this, the new two-tier grandstands were moved closer to the football field, places for people with disabilities were created, and two media platforms and a French audio system were installed.

To protect the audience from rain, a new roof was installed, which with the help of LEDs was turned into a media screen. To avoid long lines, the number of exits from the stadium was increased from 13 to 16 with expanding the aisles and building 44 cascading staircases along the perimeter of the arena. In addition, an observation deck with a breathtaking view of the city center, Novodevichy Convent, Moscow City skyscrapers and Lomonosov Moscow State University were built at the top level of the stadium. But the main advantage of the stadium was a unique football field with a natural grass lawn. Under the field itself, a drainage, heating, irrigation, aeration, and agrotechnical monitoring systems were installed. The seeds for the field were selected taking into account the climatic conditions of Moscow.

Thanks to the heating system, which maintains the temperature of plus 15 degrees Celcium, and the system of sunlight simulation, the lawn retains its natural coverage even in winter. In the coming years, Luzhniki will become the main sports cluster of the country. By the time of the World Championship, the sports complex and observation deck on the Vorobyovy Gory mountains will be connected by a cable road. In 2018, it is planned to complete the construction of a center for rhythmic gymnastics, and in 2019 — to open an aquacomplex and the ice palace «Kristall».
