An interactive decorative screen located on the wall at the entrance will be an artistic highlight of Rzhevskaya metro station. The interactive element will be arch-shaped, said the Chief Architect of Moscow, Sergey Kuznetsov.

“The digital screen will display the current time. It was decided to make it arched: this element is the basis of the overall station design and carries the idea of a time portal. As Mayor Sergey Sobyanin previously said, the Bolshaya Koltsevaya line (Large Circle Line) project will be the most ambitious in the history of Moscow metro construction,” explained Sergey Kuznetsov.

The platform will be decorated with 12 more metal arches with integrated lighting fixtures. They will be 4 meters high. According to the chief architect of Moscow, a sample of the arch that won the bid has already been fabricated.

“Working on the design of the Rzhevskaya station, we focused on the historical context of the area. We based it on a classical arch as a symbol of an invite to the city. We can observe its elements inside Rzhevskaya station as well. The complex curved shape of the arch was chosen, on the one hand, because we wanted to create vibrant architectural expression, on the other hand, because we needed to merge it with the existing design of a typical station,” explained the authors of the project, the architectural bureau Blank Architects.

The main material in the decoration of Rzhevskaya station is granite, typical for the Moscow metro. The entrance is in shades of yellow owing to the very style of Rzhevskaya railway station and the eponymous metro station, while its exit is in a calmer and paler color scheme.

Background: the concept by Blank Architects won in the open international competition for the development of the architectural design of three stations on the Bolshaya Koltsevaya line: Sheremetyevskaya, Rzhevskaya and Stromynki, hosted by the Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of Moscow.
