Sergey Kuznetsov presented the book of his drawings in the Pushkin Museum

29 December 2015

The chief architect of Moscow presented a book of drawings, published in Milan by Skira publishing house, and told how the craze of architectural graphics is interconnected with the profession of architect.

“I think for any architect drawing is not always a part of education, but also a part of everyday practice,” said Sergey Kuznetsov. Pushkin Museum of fine arts is one of my favorite places to work. The Museum’s Director Marina Loshak reminded that the history of architectural drawing is inextricably linked with the traditions of the Museum, which was always filled with students, young artists copying works of art from its collection. And one of its regular spectators and performers, according to Marina Loshak, is Sergei Kuznetsov, who often comes to the Museum for draw with his family.

“I’ve always believed in a classical education and I think that MArchI has a very strong graphics school, with a particular attention to the details. For me, the study of architectural heritage not only by literature but also from nature has always been an important part of creative activity”, — said the chief architect. — Work with legacy and studying the art of past masters is the cornerstone for it. The knowledge that we can find in it is priceless“.

In the book of drawings were included about 120 works, most of which were inspired by the motifs of the rich architectural heritage of Italy. A lot of paintings devoted to Venice. Venice is also linked to several important Sergey Kuznetsov’s projects, designed for the architectural Biennale.

During the work on the exhibition “Factory Russia” in 2010, dedicated to the redevelopment of industrial heritage in small towns of Russia, there were series of sketches Vyshny Volochok. With the participation of Sergei Kuznetsov, for the Biennale 2012, in the Russian pavilion was designed the digital dome with exposures about SKOLKOVO. “However, even in this modern form it is impossible not to see historical similarities to the form of the Roman Pantheon”, the chief architect of Moscow admitted.

Passion for Italy brought the idea of the “Only Italy” exhibition in Tretyakov gallery in which Sergey Kuznetsov took part. “What is clear in these Kuznetsov’s paintings — is the desire to restore the original shape of each piece by the most famous and interesting monuments of Italy, examining their components and getting to the very foundations of modern art”, — wrote in the introduction of the book the famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

Nevertheless, lots of architectural landscapes of other countries became the plots for architect’s drawings. He travels a lot, everywhere carrying supplies and making quick sketches of the picturesque corners of the cities of the world — Mexico, Kyoto, Tokyo, Singapore, New York...

All works has been made in different techniques — Kuznetsov, by his own words, likes to experiment, try new forms and types of drawing. His recent interests has been to draw with watercolor, and his mentor became a well-known watercolorist, master of architectural landscapes and honorary President of the American society of architectural graphics (ASAI) Thomas Schaller, who was the special guest of the presentation.

“I’m like Sergei can’t even imagine going somewhere without my notebook for sketches,” says Schaller. According to the artist any good building is the result of good drawings and good ideas, and to express these good ideas is only possible through the practice of drawing.

Sergei Kuznetsov agrees with this idea: many of the projects, he said, had come in design from the creative graphics work. For example, wave-like windows on the facade of the office of the “NOVATEK” company in Moscow or motives of “Lancet arches” in the construction of Palace of water sports in Kazan, appeared when he was drawing lots of sketches.
