19 February 2018

The chief architect of Moscow invites to the round table devoted to the project of modernization of 16 million square meters of social housing and the new city-planning policy of the city.

A round table "Global Turn: Renovating of the Housing Fund in Moscow" with the participation of the chief architect of the Russian capital, Sergei Kuznetsov will be held on March 13 from 13.30 to 14.30 at the stand of the Government of Moscow in the Palace of Festivals. Participants of the event will discuss the program of renovation of social housing in Moscow, planned for the next 15 years.

The program of renovation started in the Russian capital in the spring of 2017. In the largest metropolitan area of Europe, where more than 12 million people live today, obsolete housing stock will be destroy and new districts corresponding modern requirements to comfort of living, quality of the environment, engineering and social infrastructure will be created.

In the 50s of the 20th century, 5-storey panel houses solved the urgent task of the post-war period - housing millions of people who were left homeless. Today, these buildings and districts don’t meet the requirements of a modern city. So, it was decided to eliminate 5-storey panel buildings and build new districts in their place. In total, the program of renovation included more than 5.1 thousand houses with a total area of about 16 million square meters in which 1 million people live. At the moment, 236 launch sites have been approved for resettlement of residents.

In order to create optimal architectural and planning solutions for new houses and districts, in April 2017 the Moscow Government announced an international architectural competition for 5 experimental sites of the city. It received a great response from architects from all over the world - 132 applications from 17 countries were submitted for the competition, including Japan, Germany, France, Great Britain, Malaysia, Spain and others. In the final, 20 teams-participants were selected.

Among the participants of the competition are: Zaha Hadid Architects, Design Erick van Egeraat BV, Michel Desvigne Paysagiste, Valode & Pistre Architectes, Bofill Arquitectura, S.L. John MsAslan + Partners, Nikken Sekkei, Drees & Sommer, Carlo Ratti Associati, Alt Project, MLA +, Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners, Habidatum, Meganom and others. The winners will be announced in the spring of 2018. Their projects will form the basis for the design of all the renovation sites in Moscow.

It is logical that the presentation of the renovation program became one of the key topics of the Russian delegation at the MIPIM exhibition. This grandiose project will not only become an important experience for Moscow and for the whole Russia, but can also be used by architects and city planners around the world. The key topics of the discussion with MIPIM will be: creating a comfortable urban environment in the renovation areas - new approaches and modern solutions; development of social, engineering and transport infrastructure in the renovation zones; Renovation program as an opportunity to optimize the sphere of town-planning regulation.

We are waiting for you at the stand of the Government of Moscow on March 13 at 13.30.
